LO5: Evaluation

The Commission Unit was all about working to the brief and fulfils clients’ needs with the high quality product. Once I got the brief I was generating the ideas which might be suitable for my client, I did the swot diagrams to detect the weak ideas and select the final one which was the strongest one. I did it by comparing all advantages and disadvantages also considering at clients’ request. I selected the idea which involved the photography work as I knew I have got abilities and potential in photography therefore my photos are going to be top quality and this was also the thing my client was looking for.
To make sure my work will be relevant to my brief I decided to compare and learn something about children event photography by looking at others work. I research various kids events and images that gave me decent information of how should I position the shots of the photos, who should I photograph and how to capture children expression and feeling throughout the photos. In my opinion research helped me a lot as this was the first time I was doing the event photography I usually did portraiture, fashion or cityscapes photos but never event documentary. Research allowed me to focus on important factors when it comes to photographing children. Moreover I could see the bad and good point about competitor’s photographs and I could use this knowledge when doing my own shoot.
During the photo-shoot the weather wasn’t as good as I wanted to be, but it is how it is in the real business not everything is how you want it to be. Although I had a backup plan this was to manipulate my photos in Photoshop. They will look more bright and happy rather than dull and boring. Throughout the shoot the children got used to having the photographer (me) in the area next to them and they acted naturally which allowed me to fulfil client’s needs, because my photos was meant to be spontaneous and showing the real image , the emotions and the activities that kids adored doing.
My final images were at the high standard. My client described them as colourful, lively and expressive. So I assume that means that my pictures were at the professional level. Also by comparing my photographs to other children event images, they are truly good. They stand out well and create the lovely atmosphere which I aimed for from the beginning.
During this project I definitely improved my photographic skills. As I never had the opportunity to do the documentary event photographs, especially for the children this was something new. I think now I know I am able to do it and how to improve it from the last session. I also progress when it comes to my confidence and my communication skills. Although I am thinking that there is always a room for improvements. Also I know there is going to be a few similar projects on my way until I will be fully happy with my results.
Evaluating the work for my commission I did quite decent job. My client gave me really positive feedback. She really liked the way I approached the children while working with them at the same time. Also my photographs will be used on the Tree of Light website which proved to me that my client really liked my work. The video I made for the other school was already showing on the big event taking place in Windsor by the riverside. The representatives from different organisation such as sport clubs and schools watched the video also giving really optimistic comments about my work. I personally know that I did a good work and I am really proud of myself. If I would have a chance to do my commission again I would probably consider having a greater number of meetings with my client as I only had three meeting with Mandy Bread and sometimes we both contacted each other by telephone, because of the misunderstanding of one another. So this is area I definitely can improve on, the communication with the client. The things I learned by the commission is to be responsible what you signed for and meet the deadline when it is due. I think this is really important component when working under the brief. However I am not discouraged by my weaknesses, I am the type of person who is willing to work on my weaknesses and turn them to my strengths.
I enjoyed doing this Unit this is why I am planning to put on the website that will help me promote my work and maybe in the future draw attention of other potential client.  Overall I am satisfied with the work I produce and hopefully it will not be the first and last commission work in my life.
