LO1: Comission

Commission in the business area is the meaning of a commitment to fulfil brief given by the client. It is sure that the end outcome needs to meet customer requirements and make the company satisfied with the product. The commission, when offered is usually ‘stamped’ with a contract which is including all the details about the restriction the person has while making the product as well as budget for it. The contract need to be written and signed by both sides; practitioner and the company. Commission can be also the payment for the services provided by the individual or a company, it can also either be a compensation related to exchange, sale and any other transactions of this type.  The commission doesn’t have to be paid if conditions or the quality of work produced didn’t meet the requirements contained in a contract. To make a good piece of work it is essential to communicate with your client and show them your progress, but also setting the deadlines, so that the customer knows exactly when to expect the finished result.
           How might meetings be recorded?
The meeting with clients are usually recorder in form of written reports. However in some cases people are using the video cameras or voices. The companies are planning project throughout the documents like the schedule sheet and production sheets, they are updating those documents if any changes had been made from previous meeting.
How might the practitioner go about generating ideas?
One of the best ways to generate the idea is to connect with the client and make the conference talk together, beginning with the company needs and basics like the company logo and what the company is doing. Comparison with another business, get inspired by something, is another good way to develop the idea as we are trying to be better than our competitors. When working from the scratch to gain the suitable thoughts, you may look at the environment of the company and work from it. For example; the IT service are more likely to have really modern, silver colour scheme based designs rather than pink, because pink associates with love, girls and beauty than with computer services.
What information would need to be included in the proposal?
The proposal is the plan and suggestion of practitioner idea. Firstly of course the artist need to write what product he want to do, is it going to be poster or video advert? Next it is necessary to explain why he/she chosen this type of product; advantages and disadvantages for the company. Afterward the practitioner is required to describe product briefly. Subsequently he/she need to conclude with convincing the company to agree to make this product or offer any changes if needed.
Why is it important to estimate the cost of the work?
The budget is something all companies is restricted too. Therefore every action taken by business is counted.  For that reason the companies are demanded to estimate the cost of the product; if the company can afford to take such an action.
How might the practitioner ensure that the work comes in, on budget?
Practitioner is required to estimate the cost of all the products used to within the project. To estimate it correctly he/she need to do good amount of research finding the best deals and taking the average price to estimate the cost of product. Than practitioner is required to add the cost for eventual help from the professionals, hiring the facilities or equipment depending on what project is about.
How might the practitioners receive feedback on their work?
The practitioner can do a survey or a questionnaire. However it is best to ask the company (client) about their feedback and what they think of the work, what needs to be improved (if anything).
How might they use feedback to improve their practice when working on future commissions?
They might take some valid points about his working process and outcomes about the material used and techniques while working on the project. The company need also create the good relation with the client so they might think what they did wrong while contacting the client, several ways in which they can concact them, which way is the best. Really it is all depending on the project and what is the client needs.

LO1.1: Brief

Working with members of a new consortium Thames Arts, Henley Festival will be helping create and deliver a major new project that will result in performances in Henley, Oxford, Reading, Windsor and potentially London in July 2012.
Legacy Trust UK has just awarded a major grant to Thames Arts (Henley Festival, Oxford Inspires, Ciao! Festival and Windsor festival), a collaborative arts organisation set up to programme and promote a series of events along the River Thames as part of the Cultural Olympiad (cultural celebrations of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games) in 2012.
'The Tree of Light' has been selected to be one of only four 'Community Celebrations' by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Five spectacular events will take place in the Thames region giving more than one thousand participants from 40 schools and community groups in Oxford, Reading, Henley, Windsor and Slough the chance to take part in all the excitement of 2012. The centrepiece of the project will be a giant sculpted Tree of Light lit by low energy LED light and powered by sustainable energy largely generated by cyclists and rowers from each local community.
The yearlong project will not only celebrate the Olympic movement but will also highlight the need to live and work with sustainability and the natural environment and culminate in a major weekend celebration prior to the games. There will also be a strong educational aspect of the programme with schools and community groups from across the region working with environmental scientists and professionals from the worlds of visual arts, music and dance to create a huge performance piece

Brief for Autumn Term Educational Workshops:
The Henley festival would like to commission you to go into one of the 10 ‘Henley Hub’ participating schools or community groups across the region and document the 4 Autumn Term educational workshops for the Tree of Light programme.
The workshops will take place between early October and end of November 2011:
·         Session one will be an  ‘introduction to trees’ by a tree scientist
·         Sessions 2-4 will be creative workshops where students will be able to tell their ‘tree story’  through either physical theatre, film & photography or creative writing.
You will be required to document and report on every session. It is up to you how you document the workshops but it must be creative and informative. The end product could take the form of a video or photographic or written documentation to include a narrative describing the content of the sessions in line with the Tree of Light Evaluation Scrapbook. It could also be in the form of a press release, piece of promotional literature or web page. Your documentary may be published on the Tree of Light website, Henley Festival website or in local/regional press.
Final Deadline for workshop documentation:  Monday 5th December 2011
Interim deadlines: After each session you must email Mandy Beard with an update on the event and a brief outline on how you documented the workshops. (You must be willing to adapt your work accordingly)
Budget: We have no budget for this project and therefore you must use your imagination and college equipment to create and document the workshops to the best of your ability without any funds.

LO1.2: Proposal

The work I am commissioned to produce is based around photography and design. My aim is to create the booklet in a form of report of what was going on during the workshops in South Moreton Primary School. The booklet will be required to have the right design matching to the theme of ‘The Trees Life Cycle’ and the companies involved in this project. Therefore I will try to use the colours that will connect with the theme as well as will harmonize logos. I will also capture what was going on the sessions by doing the photo-shoots within three days of workshops. This will help me support my written work and present some visual evidence for the target audience. Also it will make my booklet more attractive and appealing.

On each day I will bring my camera and tripod, these are the equipment’s I will use throughout this project. On the first day I will attempt to get familiar with the surroundings and good camera shots. However I will mainly focus on children’s facial expressions and reactions to professional teachers that will educate children about trees. The second day will be about gathering information’s and feedbacks from students and teachers about the workshops; I will also try to gather some quotations to include in my report to present the opinions about the project. The third day will be taking photos of children filming their films about trees. Additionally I will help teacher’s b by taking care of the group of children and supporting them with my thoughts and ideas.
As a finish product I should be able to deliver a good piece of report in a form of the booklet with a reasonable amount of visuals in this case images of the children’s participating in the workshops.

Additional Request

Additional piece of work that I was requested to create is the video that will present the physical theatre workshop of the group of GCSE girls from The Piggott School. The video will present around 3 minute long piece that will include the pre-production work and final dance. I will also interview some students to get the feedback about their experience. The final product will be given on the DVD.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRIEF
Student name: Sandra Ksiazek
Client name: The Henley Festival
Project title: The Tree of Light
Question
Response
1. What do you prefer me to do photography or filming?
Depends what you prefer doing, and what your strength is… So I think if your friend is doing filming, it is better to deliver some nice, professional photographs for us.

2. How do you want me to present the work for you? Do you think the webpage would be suitable for this project?
I will consider this idea, however I think you should focus on the photography and report. Than we could think about turning the information you gather into something more creative.

3. What is the closest school I could get to using public transport?
Probably the ones in Henley, which are Gillotts and Trinity Primary school. There are others around this area, two in Wargrave and one in Twyford. I suggest you look at them and find how to get to them and let me know which one you decided to do for the project.

LO2: Summary of Brief

SUMMARY OF BRIEF

Information from the brief
 Comments
What are their ideas for the commission?
The ideas I got from my potential client are very interesting. The main idea is to document the events in Primary School which were meant to teach children more about the environment and learn them practical skills ;they wouldn’t had chance to do without the workshops. The brief conception was to make photographs, film and interview the people and capture their feelings about this project.
I decided to do photography and written review about the events as I think this is the best way to represent the emotions which participants had while attending the sessions. I also like photography; therefore I will be able to make really good photographs for the company, to satisfy their needs which are important when working for the commission.
What is the work for?
(Will it have a particular function?)
The intension for this work is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the event to the sponsors and prove to them that their money was spending effectively. It is also to find any improvements which might help in the future when planning similar events.
This is why my job will be a journalist and photographer.
Who is the intended audience/consumer for the work?
The primary target audience is the children’s in primary schools across the Thames Valley area. This project is aiming to teach them various practical skills instead of sitting in the classroom. However the other audiences are of course the teachers and guardians which will be accompanying the sessions. Their opinion will be very significant.

What are the time constraints?
The sessions in different schools will be held up till December. However the end product must be completed by 5th December so that there would be an opportunity to improve it.
I think this is great because the deadline for this project is at the beginning of February. Therefore I will be able to complete my project and improve it and evaluate it on time by January.
What will your budget be?
There is no budget.
All the equipment will be hired from college. The product will be created on the computer, so there is no need to buy any materials.

Are there any other constraints (e.g. size, dimensions, materials to be used, style)?
The photographic work needs to be done professionally, focusing on the facial expression and must document the event; therefore the style of photography is documentary. Where it comes to written reports, it is good to have quotes with somebody’s opinion to back up your points, and also to provide some real estimation of how did the event went? Was it useful and enjoyable? Or was it boring and not beneficial?

I will interview the people who attended the sessions each time to get their opinion. I will definitely ask some teacher what their opinion is, also I will ask the professionals  throughout this session how did it went, most importantly I will try to interview some students what their thoughts are about this sessions?

Issues discussed
Decisions made
Action to be taken
We discussed what the project is about, why the company is doing such a thing and what our role would be within this project. We got the useful information, the promotional packet, the list of schools and activities which will be run over next term and the report list which I will need to analyze and take to consideration when producing my product. The project is about the Tree Cycle Life however it is connected to the upcoming summer Olympics next year. Its aim is to teach children in a practical way, getting them to do extraordinary activities to fascinate and encourage them more to learn helpful information.

Decision that I considered was to develop the company promotional materials, but the company already had its own color theme and logos, therefore there wouldn’t be anything else I could possibly ass into it. So Mandy Beard asked me to generate the high quality pictures for her and a written article to go onto the press or web blogs. She also asked to gather some opinions form teachers and participants as well as guardians, parents. Then I decided on the school I would like to go and document the events. I chose South Moreton Primary School as I thought I will be able to make my way there without any difficulties and I was interested in the program this schools had which are the film making activities. In my opinion it is really interesting and the photographs could look very effective.

The action I need to take is to prepare my camera making sure the battery is full. Also take a notebook to make some notes and record the quotes and opinions of people who will attend the session. I also need to arrange the transport to get to school location.

LO2,3 and 4.3: Similar Products Research

To help me complete my commission project at the high level I decided to look at others work. I think it will support developing my ideas and will give me a better understanding about what I am required to produce.
Firstly I looked at the photographs captured on children events and because I will be photographing the three day event it is really helpful for me to look at the styles and ideas that the professionals have.
I explored the photos taken during the Art Day in 2010 involving the children. While viewing these photos I noticed the advantages they had and how does the photographer presented the children and showed their emotions across to the audience.
What I liked about those pictures is the fact that the photographer while photographing children creating the art pieces, he also gets his attentions to major details like composition, lighting and framing. The other thing I think was important is to show children with their teacher or guardian that explained how to produce the art piece because it correspondingly is presenting children interest into the subject, you could tell this by their facial expression as well. Additional element worth remembering for me while doing my shoots is to try capturing children when they are doing something spontaneously this make photo more interesting and showing true reflection of the situation. This is what my client is demanding from me.

Next company I looked at was Children’s Heart Association. Photos that they included on their website might not be as professional as the ones from the Art Day, but they referred to the subject I am going to photograph which is the children event. On the other hand I can see the bad examples of photos to avoid doing the same mistake as them. The disadvantages of those images were the bad balance of colours, brightness and contrast. On some photos I didn’t liked the angle and point of view from which the photo was taken as it didn’t showed the children reactions and feelings. However to good side of those pictures is the fact that they were very spontaneous and I really liked it, it is like a documentary photography work from children event. Moreover the Children’s Heart Association also kept the suitable conventions to include the photos when children are playing with the teachers or guardians while doing the activity.
As a conclusion I can write that those images have me a wider prospective where it comes to children documentary photography. I think I will take all the valid points I made here and I will apply them into my own work trying to avoid doing the mistakes these practitioners did.

As my final project is the booklet design with supporting photos the photography wasn’t the only area I explored, additionally I reviewed the booklet ideas. The first booklet is about some insurance services. It has modern style design I can tell it by its framing and shapes used. Also the multi theme colours and icons where used on the design which made this booklet more stimulating and attention-grabbing. I think the use of colours and black and white photography worked really well together and I might consider using the same idea. The booklet is not text heavy which is a positive, also its lay out is clear and simple to read. The only thing I don’t like about it is the use of icons on the front page I thing they are effective, but there is too many of them within this booklet already.
Next product I discovered was the Newborn Booklet. Again I like the black and white photographs used at the front of the booklet.  However this time there is only one colour used which make the booklet look more formal. The advantages that this design has are the fact that the logo (cross) is used throughout booklet. In my opinion it creates the product more consistent. On the other hand I don’t like the free space on the second page. I think it appearing to be too blank. What I would do in this case may be changing the font to bigger or spread out the information, in result change the lay out. I would also suggest putting another photo there otherwise the booklet is matching the theme quite well and I believe it is fitting to its purpose.

LO2.1: Target Audience

For my project I am required to create the booklet with supporting photos explaining and summarizing how effective the workshops in the South Moreton School were. This booklet is mainly directed at the sponsors who funded these events to review and evaluate the outcomes of the Tree of Light project, making sure their money was invested properly. They are the primary audience for this part of my work, however the booklet can be also shown to the parents of the children’s to show them what their children’s were doing with Tree of Light and Thames Arts organisation over the period of time and what they learned and enjoyed doing.

For the second part of my commission I was asked to create the video for the dance piece again with connection to the tree nature and Olympics the same theme as the workshops. This time my primary audience were the students participating in the dancing classes and their colleagues. The aim of the video is to show the results of the students hard work and how they worked together to create the final dance. It is also to encourage other to take part in preparation for the Olympics and take some actions toward it as this might be the only time the Olympics will take place in England. My secondary audience are again the parents that are always willing to see their children’s progress, but also the school itself.  The Piggott School will have the benefits from the video as they could use the video on their website as a promoting piece or show it on the assemblies to persuade the younger students to take part in the activities like this as well.
Overall I think my products will aim straight at my target audience and the work I will produce will fulfil my client and audience needs.  In my opinion the good plan and contact with the client is the key to success and so far I have been doing the good job. Hopefully I will keep it up and will create a effective products.
